If you've listened to any country or mainstream radio station in the last 5 years, chances are you've heard Cruise by Florida Georgia Line several times (who am I kidding, there for a while you would hear it every hour, sometimes on multiple stations). Some of you also may know that it was co-written by country newcomer, Chase Rice.
While he may have released only a few songs to radio, Chase already has quite a fan following. This is apparent during his live shows that are typically sell-outs. I've had the opportunity to see Chase perform and grow as an artist over the last few years. In late 2017, Chase finally released his highly-anticipated sophomore album, Lambs and Lions.
This album is different than anything Chase has released previously, and I believe this change in his style will take Chase to the next level as an artist. With Chase's debut album, he was put into the category of "bro-country" prematurely. Lions and Lambs proves that Chase is ready to establish himself as an artist that releases songs with meaning and songs that listeners can relate to on multiple levels.
I love this entire album all the way through because of the different sound it has. It is unlike any album I have heard recently and I like that because honestly, a lot of the new music that has come out recently all sounds the same. My top songs have to be Three Chords & The Truth, On Tonight, Lions, and Eyes on You. Each song on the album has the ability to put me in a different mood. Most of them bring me joy and can put a smile on my face when I've had a tough day.
The lead single from the album, Three Chords & The Truth, was inspired by a quote from the 1950s that is often used to describe country music. Three Chords and The Truth is the definition of authentic Country Music. Most songs can be played using a variation of the same chords and the lyrics of authentic country songs tell a story and deliver a message that is honest and unapologetic.
Chase isn't afraid to push the boundaries and go outside the typical realm of what is considered "country". One song that I will never get tired of listening to is Eyes on You. Let me tell you, I was SO excited when it finally went to #1 on the country chart a few months ago. Chase deserved this accomplishment more than any other artist I know. He's worked so hard to get there as a performer and finally did it!
In June, I attended CMA Fest in Nashville and was able to see Chase headline Thursday night at Ascend Amphitheater. Nashville has a noise curfew and Chase's set wasn't over yet--he had one song left, Cruise. Instead of ending his set early, he cut the PA system, played acoustically, and had the crowd sing at the top of their lungs. It was by far, one of the coolest moments I've seen at a Chase Rice concert and unlike anything else I've ever experienced. The energy of the crowd that night was absolutely insane! That night was also the night before Chase's new single--Lonely If You Are was released. It was the first time Chase had ever played a song before it was even out. You could tell that the moment was just as special for Chase as it was for the crowd. I hope that he has just as much success with this single and we see a whole bunch more number ones come from his upcoming album. With the teasers he's been posting on his socials, I can hardly wait for this new music to drop!
